Before you can get married or have a civil partnership, you and your partner must give notice to a registrar. This must happen at least 29 days before your ceremony or registration. The maximum notice you can give is 3 months.

When you have booked your venue you're ready to give notice.

How to give notice

Whether you're having a civil, religious or belief ceremony or a simple registration, you and your partner must give notice by sending us a notice form for each partner and some other documents. These must all be originals, not photocopies or digital versions, apart from any you only get digitally, like bank statements and bills.

A certified translation must be provided with any documents that are not in English.

If you want to get married

You must each complete the M10 marriage notice form (PDF, 198KB) and send it to us. Read the guidance on how to complete the M10 form (PDF, 105KB).

You can have a civil marriage or civil partnership in a registration office or authorised venue. Religious or belief marriages can take place anywhere.
Give notice
Before you can get married or have a civil partnership you must tell us you plan to get married. This is called giving notice.
What you must send us
As well as your notice forms, you must send us some other documents. A certified translation must be provided with any documents that are not in English.
Fees we charge you
The fee to give notice is £90 (£45 for each partner). This fee is not refundable. There are additional charges, depending on the type and location of your service.

After we process your application
We'll return all your documents after we've processed them. You'll need a schedule to get married or have a civil ceremony, and you'll have to sign it and send it back to us before we send your certificate.
