Garden waste

Sign up for garden waste collections, or find out how else to manage your garden waste.

Sign up for garden waste collections

We will start collecting garden waste from March 2025. This is an optional, paid for service, which will run from March to November each year. You can choose to sign up again each year after this.

How much it costs

This service costs £40 a year for each bin permit, or £20 if you get means-tested Council Tax Reduction. You can pay for more bin permits if you think you'll need extra. We'll send you a new brown bin to go with each permit you order. You will be asked to follow the instructions that come with your permit and stick it to the side of your bin.

When it starts

If you signed up before 30 November, your collections will start in March 2025.

If you sign up between 1 December 2024 and 31 March 2025, your collections will start in June 2025.

How to cancel the service

Email gardenwaste@dumgal.gov.uk to cancel the service.

You can cancel the service and get a refund up to 14 days after you've signed up. After 14 days you will not be able to get a refund.

How we'll collect your garden waste

We'll collect your garden waste bin every two weeks, in the same way we collect your rubbish and recycling bins from the kerbside. All garden waste bins will be one size, 240ltr and you will not be able to request a different size. We'll tell you when your bins will be collected.

What we'll collect in your garden waste bin

Put the garden waste directly into the bin. Do not put it in a plastic bag as this contaminates the recycling and we will not collect it.

We'll collect:

  • flowers
  • plants
  • weeds
  • grass cuttings
  • leaves
  • hedge cuttings
  • twigs, small branches
  • bark, as long as it's untreated and not coloured

We will not collect your bin if it contains:

  • stone
  • rubble
  • soil
  • turf
  • animal waste
  • animal bedding
  • edging
  • plant pots
  • trees
  • large branches
  • invasive non-native species, like Japanese knotweed
  • food waste
  • any other non-garden waste

Change your address

Email gardenwaste@dumgal.gov.uk if you need to change your address after you've signed up. We'll move your permit to the new address.
