After we process your application

It can take several weeks to process your application. We'll contact you when we've finished or if we need any further information or documents.

How to get your documents back

We'll return your documents after we've processed them. If you have sent us your passport we'll send it and your other documents back to you using Royal Mail Special Delivery.

To get your documents back you have 2 options:

1. Pay the postage fee of £10 when you pay your other fees.
2. Include a pre-paid self-addressed envelope with your notice forms and other documents. If you choose this option you should use a service with insurance or that requires a signature on delivery, as we'll be sending back your valuable documents.

Your schedule

Your schedule is a form you sign during your ceremony or registration. You need the schedule to get married or have a civil ceremony or registration. It must be signed and returned to the registration office within 3 days of the ceremony or registration for the marriage or civil partnership to be registered. You can bring it in person or post it.

Religious or belief ceremonies

If you're having a religious or belief ceremony you must collect your schedule from the office up to 7 days before the ceremony. Either partner can collect it.

If you are being married in Gretna Registration Office or Gretna Green, you do not need to make an appointment.

Civil ceremonies and registrations

If you're having a civil ceremony the registrar will bring your schedule to your wedding and return it to the registrar's office for you.

Your marriage or civil partnership certificate

After we've received your signed schedule we'll post your marriage or civil partnership certificate (extract) to you. This usually takes about a week.
