Student discount

Your Council Tax bill could be reduced if you are a full-time student or live with students.

How to qualify

There are 2 levels of discount, depending on who lives in the property:

  • 100% discount if everyone in the property is a student
  • 25% discount if students and non-students live in the property

Definition of student

A person is counted as a student for Council Tax if one of the following applies to them:

  • they study for at least 21 hours a week, for at least 24 weeks in each academic year
  • they are under 20 and studying for A levels, Highers, HNDs, HNCs or Level 4 SVQs for at least 12 hours a week, for at least three months
  • they are registered with the British Council as a foreign language assistant and work in a school or other educational establishment

How to apply

You'll need to upload a copy of your student certificate to apply. If you do not upload your certificate when you apply, you must email a copy of it to council.tax@dumgal.gov.uk within 14 days of your application, or you will have to apply again.

Your student certificate shows your full name, course name, qualification you are studying towards, and the start and end date of your course. You can get it from your university or college.
