Apply for Council Tax discounts and exemptions
Find out what discounts, reductions and exemptions you may be able to claim to reduce your Council Tax bill for an occupied property.
Disabled person reduction
You can apply for a reduction of your Council Tax if you live with a disabled person. If your application is successful, you'll pay the Council Tax for the band below your normal band. If you're already in the lowest band, you'll get a discount.
How to qualify
You may qualify for this reduction if your home has any of the following:
- an extra bathroom or kitchen to meet a disabled resident's needs
- enough floor space for a disabled resident to use a wheelchair indoors
- a room designed to meet a disabled resident's needs (not including a bathroom, kitchen or toilet)
These must be essential for, or hugely important to, the disabled person, so that without the room or space it would be physically impossible or extremely difficult for them to live there.
To show you qualify, we'll ask you for:
- information about the disabled person
- information about the property
- evidence from the disabled person's doctor
