Check if the work needs a building warrant

You may need a building warrant if you are building, altering, extending or demolishing a building, though some building works are exempt.

If you intend to build, alter, extend or demolish a building, you will probably need a building warrant. Some types of work are exempt.

It's an offence to start work that requires building warrant approval without first obtaining the relevant permission.

We have written a guidance document on the types of work that require a building warrant and also work that may be exempt – go to building regulations documents

For further guidance read the Scottish Government Building Standards customer journey.
