Get help to pay your bill

If you miss a Council Tax instalment we'll contact you to discuss payment.

What happens if you do not pay your bill

We want to avoid taking any action to recover your Council Tax payments. It's always best to contact us as soon as you know there's a problem with your payment.

If you do not contact us, we will not know you are having problems paying, so we will not be able to help you. Instead may have to take action to recover the Council Tax you owe us.

Reminder notice

We'll send you a reminder notice if you miss your regular Council Tax payment. We'll ask you to pay the outstanding amount within a week. If we need to send reminders for 2 missed payments, we'll send you a final notice.

Final notice

We'll send you a final notice if you miss 2 payments. You'll lose the option to pay in instalments and we'll ask for full payment of the outstanding balance of your Council Tax for the financial year. If you only have one instalment to pay, we will not send a reminder.

If you fail to pay your Council Tax bill, we will add a 10% charge to the amount due and take legal action to recover what you owe us. Further action to recover debt can include:

  • your bank or building society account can be frozen
  • payments for your Council Tax can be taken out of your pay
  • payments for your Council Tax can be taken out of your benefits
  • court action that could result in your home being repossessed
