English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) service provides advice, consultation, training for school staff, and teaching for multilingual children and young people.

We follow Education Scotland's Learning in 2 + Languages guidance.

EAL teachers work with staff in schools to:

  • identify and assess need
  • provide appropriate levels of support
  • supply effective teaching strategies and resources
  • promote multilingualism
  • ensure good communication between school and home

How to get support

You should discuss any concerns about your child's progress or wellbeing:

  • in primary school with the class teacher or head teacher
  • in secondary school with the pupil support teacher
