Additional support for learning (ASL)

Find out what to do if your child needs additional support to benefit fully from their education.

Overview

Some children and young people need extra help in school to make progress. This is known as additional support for learning.

Our supporting learners team uses our stages of intervention to:

  • identify additional support needs
  • provide the additional support required
  • monitor the needs and support we provide
  • respond to requests for assessment from parents

Support at school

The Scottish Government believes most children should get their education in a mainstream setting.

If you think your child needs additional support, or if you have any concerns about their progress or wellbeing, you should first discuss this with:

  • the class teacher or head teacher in primary school
  • the pupil support teacher in secondary school
